SCIL Celebrates 10th birthday and mailing of 500,000 Imagination Library Books!

The Sullivan County Imagination Library recently celebrated two milestones: its 10th birthday and the mailing of 500,000 Imagination Library books to local preschool children over those 10 years. Three businesses and one non-profit organization were honored for their long-standing commitment to early childhood literacy: Citizen’s Bank, Eastman Chemical Company Foundation, Eastman Credit Union, and Speedway Children’s Charities. Each has donated to the Sullivan County Imagination Library every year for the entire 10 years of our existence. When you see people from these businesses, please thank them for us. They care about the future of our children.

500,000 BOOK CELEBRATION!!!

500,000 Book Celebration!!!

You are invited to join the Sullivan County Imagination Library Board 0f Directors as we celebrate the milestone of mailing of 500,000 books to Sullivan County children from birth to age five. This special program will be April 25 at the First Presbyterian Church on Church Circle, 100 Lane, Kingsport, TN from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

All Sullivan County children under the age of five years old may be registered by their parent for Imagination Library books which are mailed each month to the child’s home. There is no cost to the parent regardless of income. As an affiliate of the Dollywood Foundation, our board members maintain the data base of registered children and share the cost of the books with the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. Many local sponsors have generously donated to help provide the necessary funds for this unique program.

Since the first order in October, 2004, 2,237 children have enjoyed the thrill of receiving their very own books.

Having books in the home and reading to children is the best indicator of success in school and later life.

Recently the SCIL participated in an event at Firehouse #2 in Kingsport honoring firefighters and the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Sullivan County Imagination Library.  There was a proclamation  from the mayor of Kingsport honoring the SCIL’s 10 years, proclaiming Thursday, February 27, 2014, “Imagination Library Day.”  A firefighter read an Imagination Library book to preschool children from the Palmer Center, and the children were all given a copy of the book and a coloring book.
